PERIODONTICS

Periodontology is the branch of Dentistry that is responsible for the treatment of diseases that directly affect the gum, ligaments and other soft tissues that surround the tooth.

Enfermedad periodontal

This medical-surgical specialty focuses on the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of periodontal diseases such as periodontitis (destruction of the bone that supports the tooth) or gingivitis (inflammation and bleeding of the gum without affecting the bone).

Periodontal health has a direct impact on the general health of the patient. In its most advanced stage, periodontitis can lead to tooth loss, so it is important to go to the dentist as soon as the first symptoms appear.

At Brånemark Las Palmas our specialists can solve any periodontal disease with the help of our hygienists and clinic assistants dedicated to treating these diseases and preventing their relapses.

Phases of periodontal treatment in Brånemark Las Palmas

In our dental clinic in Las Palmas we use the GBT (Guided Biofilm Therapy) procedure. During this therapy, we perform a protocol in which we thoroughly examine the condition of the patient’s mouth at the first appointment and then do a rigorous follow-up.

In the first periodontal visit we carry out the following steps:

1

We make a diagnosis, with the help of specific X-rays and a probing carried out with our Florida Probe, a computerized system that allows us to know with greater precision the depth of the pocket, recession, suppuration, furcation, mobility and plaque present in the gums.

2

We apply a colouring agent to reveal 100% of the Biofilm, as well as to show our patient how to follow a correct oral hygiene routine.

3

We motivate our patient by giving them a free Philips Sonicare toothbrush and teaching them how to use it. In this way we emphasize the importance of a good oral health routine..

4

With the use of Airflow, we proceed to remove the Biofilm, stains and bacterial plaque.

5

If the patient has periodontal pockets of 4mm to 9mm we add the use of Perioflow to eliminate the Biofilm.

6

With the Piezon instrument we remove the remaining supra and subgingival calcified deposits, called tartar.

7

To check that we have completely removed the tartar, we reapply the revealing agent and proceed to diagnose possible cavities once again. Finally, we apply fluoride.

8

After the first visit, we schedule four GBT treatments with the patient over the next four months. In the fifth month a reevaluation of their condition is carried out.

More complex cases may require surgery. Our expert surgeons will take care of these situations.

What is the relationship of diabetes and periodontal disease?

¿Qué relación tienen la diabetes y la enfermedad periodontal?

People with this disease have a greater predisposition to suffer infections such as gingivitis or pyorrhea. This is due to the high concentration of glucose levels in your blood stimulates the growth of the bacteria that cause gum disease.

In addition, several scientific studies have suggested that periodontal diseases could increase the severity and speed with which diabetes progresses. For this reason, at Brånemark Las Palmas we recommend diabetic patients to make regular visits to the dentist to check the health of their mouth and to be aware of any infection that is occurring.

With a good control of oral health we can stabilize the disease and ensure that a diabetic person can reduce the amount of insulin they need daily, which will lead to a significant improvement in their quality of life.

Are smokers at a higher risk of getting periodonta diseasel?

It is no secret that tobacco is a very harmful habit for our health. But, specifically, tobacco has a direct relationship with the presence of periodontal diseases. There are three main problems for the dental health of smokers:

1

In the first place, the substances contained in tobacco reduce the defenses of the immune system, thus favoring the deterioration of dental structures and predisposing them to disease.

2

Smoking makes it difficult for us to realize that we have periodontal disease. The clearest sign is bleeding gums, but when we smoke, our gums receive a lower amount of blood supply and oxygen, which causes less or no bleeding. That they do not bleed, does not mean that there is no disease present, simply that tobacco may be masking it.

3

Tobacco causes the rejection of some dental health treatments, among them is periodontics. In the case of smokers, the treatment may not be as effective and may even have contraindications.

At Brånemark Las Palmas dental clinic we carry out periodic check-ups after the initial periodontal treatment; We urge the patient to quit smoking and develop a good oral hygiene routine to ensure successful treatment.
